NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students Union, Rambrai Circle visited the site of a proposed 2 MW micro-hydel power project in Khri river (Kyrshai) of West Khasi Hills district by the Assam government on on October 24.

“We have visited the site and we can say that altogether 26 villages will be affected if the the Assam Government will implement this power project” Pyrshang Warjri president of KSU Rambrai said.

He also said that the proposed Dam will affect the fragile ecosystem of the area and flora and fauna of that area adding that they met some local leaders including the headmen and sordars of that area to discuss the matter.

In their discussion all KSU Sordar’s Headmen and the people of 26 villages demand that they won’t allow the Assam Government to construct this dam, “we are not foreigners in our home land” one of a local leaders said.

It may be mentioned that even the HSPDP is against the proposed power project.

Earlier, HSPDP spokesperson G Nonglong said that the party would not allow the hydel project to come up at the Khri river at any cost since the proposed site of the dam is falling under the ‘disputed areas’.

“Allowing setting up the project would tantamount to accepting the claim by Assam and indirectly agreeing to the map published by the Survey of India in 2009 as a valid one,” Nonglong said.
