SHILLONG: A day after the Durga Puja celebrations ended in the city, the Seng Khasi, an indigenous religious organization of the Khasi tribals on Thursday sought appropriate action against the Irish Shullai Durga Puja committee for misuse of its sacred flag.

In a letter submitted to East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal here on Thursday, Seng Khasi Ri Raid Laban president BS Marbaniang demanded necessary and appropriate action by the government against the puja committee at the earliest as per provisions of the law.

Condemning the act, Marbaniang said, “Such acts of deliberate malicious intention have deeply affected the religious sentiments of all the Seng Khasi believers of the State.”

According to the Seng Khasi officials, the Irish Shullai Durga Puja committee in the city had ‘misused’ the sacred flag of the Khasi tribal religion by carrying it without any authorization from the concerned office and using it during the process of immersion of the idol of Goddess Durga on Wednesday.

The Deputy Commissioner has assured that the matter would be dealt with seriously and accordingly.

The Durga Puja committee was named after the mother of Sanbor Shullai, local legislator and Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.
