SHILLONG: A second attempt by activist Pynskhemlang Nongshlong to hold a hunger strike in the capital city here on Friday ended in failure as he was denied permission by the district administration and was subsequently arrested for violating a prohibitory order imposed by the district administration earlier.
Nongshlong reached here on Friday in an attempt to launch his second phase of agitation to demand solution to the border dispute with neighbouring Assam.
Nongshlong had earlier attempted to go on a hunger strike on October 18, but had postponed the same, owing to the Durga Puja celebrations.
On Friday, Nongshlong was prevented by police from enter the Secretariat premises. He, however, managed to enter the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office accompanied by one Ephrem Khardewsaw, a resident of Mawsikar, and other youths from West Khasi Hills.
Later, Nongshlong and his associates were arrested after he refused to leave the DC’s Office while demanding permission to hold his agitation at a separate venue and also asking the Government to give in writing all the steps it has taken to resolve the border issue.
“Prohibitory order was imposed and the youth was picked up for his resistance to leave the place. Later he was released,” East Khasi Hills Additional District Magistrate DM Wahlang said.
