ISTANBUL: Victoria Azarenka wrapped up the season-ending number one position in the world by beating Li Na 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Friday in the WTA Championships.
Azarenka secured a spot in the semifinals and will next play Maria Sharapova.
”It’s kind of difficult to believe that a little girl from Belarus is on that list,” said Azarenka.
”It’s really incredible achievement. When I started to play tennis I had this big picture in my head that I want to be there. Back then it’s so far away. It’s like pretty much touching the sky.
”I’m here sitting kind of in the sky, so it’s really incredible feeling.”
The winner of the Azarenka-Sharapova clash will meet Serena Williams in the final after the American cruised to victory over Agnieszka Radwanska6-2, 6-1 Saturday.
Williams was never challenged by the fourth-ranked Radwanska apart from dropping serve in the fourth game of the first set.
The American has dominated the second half of the year, winning Wimbledon, and Olympic gold medal and the US Open. She has won 47 of her past 49 matches and will finish 2012 as No. 3. (AP)
