NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills District Administration on Friday prevented an attempt by NGOs and the villagers of Langpih to hold a hunger strike in the marketplace at Langpih.

Sensing trouble, the District Administration issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC in the whole area of Langpih and warned that anyone who violates the orders would be arrested.

The NGOs who attempted to sit on the hunger strike included HANM, CSWO, WPM, besides Pynskhemlang Nongshlong who reached Langpih on Thursday night.

Having failed to sit on a hunger strike in Shillong, Nongshlong made a failed attempt to resume his agitation at Langpih demanding solution of the border dispute with the neighbouring state of Assam.

On Friday at 10am, Nongshlong, members of the NGOs and the villagers of Langpih were stopped by the Meghalaya Police from entering the Langpih market area.

It was also witnessed that hundreds of Police personnel from Meghalaya and Assam were securing the market place right from Friday morning and protesters were not allowed inside it.

MB Tongper, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC), on Friday announced that the District Administration has not allowed any group or individual to sit for the hunger strike and added that if anyone forcefully attempted to do so, they would be arrested immediately.

It was also witnessed that the District Administration maintained strict vigil even on the road leading to the Langpih market, starting from Tiehthawiar, and prevented anyone from going to the Langpih maket.

However, this action by the Police created a lot of problems for the villagers who intended to go to Langpih to attend the weekly market which falls every Friday.
