Silchar: All 178 families residing along the zero line of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Cachar and Karimganj districts would be soon allotted land and rehabilitated.
A detailed proposal by the administration of both the districts has been sent to the state government with the residents likely to settled in Jalalpur area of the district, official sources said.
People living along the 124 km long border, of which 92 km falls in Cachar and 32 km in Karimganj, face many problems as they can enter India only four times during the day when the BSF personnel open the border gate.
The gate remains closed from sunset to sunrise and the people have to complete several formalities before they can enter the Indian side.
The Cachar district administration on the basis of public demand has decided to rehabilite these families within the border area and land has been sanctioned to them in the recent Land Advisory Committee meeting, Katigorah Circle Officer Khaleda Sultana Ahmed said. Cachar Deputy Commissioner Harendra Kumar Deva Mahanta said that the people can cultivate as usual on the land outside the fencing area but should maintain the scheduled gate timings given by the BSF.
