SHILLONG: Police have arrested head assistance (HA) of the office of the Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills, Elphinson Marak for allegedly misappropriating more than Rs 15 lakh of the Meghalaya Police Social Service Scheme (MPSSS).

Rs 15, 40, 000, which includes the monthly rebate money deposited by the Unit Wet Canteen running into lakh for rupees, was meant to be deposited in a LIC account. He, allegedly, has not deposited any money since 2009. In this regard, an FIR has been lodged against the official by the SP of East Garo Hills recently after the matter was brought to his notice by the officials of the LIC. The accused was arrested on Thursday on the basis of an FIR lodged by the SP and was remanded to 7-day police custody. “I came to know about this matter just recently,” EGH SP Jerry Marak said. According to the SP, under the MPSSS, Rs 100 is deducted every month from all the staff of the office and deposited with LIC which ensured benefits to the staff. However, it was shocking to note that the account remained stagnant since 2009. Elphinson, the senior most staff in the office, had three years of service left.
