SHILLONG: In line with the various scams unearthed by the CAG over the years, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Vinod Rai on Tuesday said that the elected representative of the states should act on it and it is not the duty of the CAG to act on recommendations.
Speaking to a group of reporters here on the sidelines of the 20th convocation of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Rai said corruption in high places needs to be destroyed to raise the standards of efficiency in administration of the country.
It may be mentioned that various scams worth crores of rupees have been unearthed in the State by the CAG over the years.
“Unless we destroy corruption in high places, root out every trace of nepotism, love of power and profiteering, we will not be able to raise the standards of efficiency in administration as well as in the production and distribution of the necessary goods of life,” he said.
Underscoring the need to practice and promote ethical values in any profession, Rai mentioned that no organization or profession can be sustainable and successful in the long run, unless it is built on an “edifice of credibility” and “integrity.” Rai was of the opinion that ethical management and leadership is the cornerstone for any successful organization.
“One has to set the tone and create a culture of honesty and integrity. Adherence to ethics and integrity needs to be ingrained in the subconscious and not compromised under any circumstances,” he said.
Emphasizing that the only way to achieve excellence in the work culture is to love what one does and believes in it, Rai said, “The higher you rise, the higher you think. If you think small then you remain small, but if you dare and dream big and work for realizing the big things of life then, in your endeavour to realize them, you grow big in the process.”Revealing that India has the largest unemployable engineers and is far behind neighbouring China, Rai stressed on the need to strive for excellence.
Altogether 8035 students were conferred with the different degrees (Ph.d, MPhil, PG degrees, Bachelor’s degrees) at the convocation.
Earlier, vice-chancellor of NEHU, Prof A N Rai while congratulating the students also informed that the all India ranking of NEHU is 16th in a country which has more than six hundred universities.
