NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students Union, Nongstoin Circle and Nongpyndeng Unit on Friday visited Nongpyndeng to access the bad road conditions which have been left at the same state since 2007 by the PWD department.
“Nongpyndeng Village a ‘model village’ in Nongstoin is the centre for learning with many premiere institutions located in the district.
Davies Wanniang, KSU president, Nongstoin circle said that it was sad that this model village with its premier institutes is also home to the worst roads imaguinable.
The roads are devoid of any drainage and pot-holes decorate it. Sarcastically speaking, pot-holes are so large that they could well be used by the fisheries department for breeding fishes.
Hamarbiangbor Nongsiej, KSU Nongpyndeng unit president told pressmen that during the summers, the roads become muddy and students walking along the roads have to attend school with their muddy shoes and clothes.
During winters, the roads are so dusty that students attending school on foot look like they have put on some gaudy make up.
This road is frequented by commuters that may well be in figures above three thousand and it is disheartening to see the terrible conditions and unavailibility of footpath.
According to Nongsiej, the project for the road within Nongpyndeng village was sanctioned in 2007. This road is also the way to Maweit in the district.
Maweit being a coal belt sends its daily haul of coal from the area to elsewhere via Nongpyndeng. These heavy trucks plying everyday damage the road sooner than expected.
Since it was built in 2007, the road has been deteriorating everyday and has received no maintenance or repairing ever since.
The KSU has issued a 20 days ultimatum to the PWD department for repairing the said road with black topping starting from November 9, failing which the students’ body will launch a series of agitations.
