SHILLONG: The State Election Committee (SEC) of the Congress is likely to meet by the end of this month to scrutinize and examine the applications of various candidates who have applied for the party ticket to contest the upcoming Assembly election.

“The SEC is scheduled to meet by the end of November to discuss issues pertaining to the party ticket,” MPCC working president Deborah C Marak told The Shillong Times on Sunday.

According to Marak, the SEC would be scrutinizing the profiles of the various aspirants who have applied for the party tickets.

She informed that after the SEC completes the scrutiny, a final scrutiny of the candidates would be done by the State Election Coordination Committee (SECC) which is led by CWC member in charge Meghalaya,

Dhaniram Shandil before the list is forwarded to the AICC for a final call.

“It is difficult to say when the announcement of the ticket would be made,” Marak said.

Marak also informed that the MPCC has received the recommendations from the various Blocks and District Congress Committees.

“At present, we are compiling the details of the various ticket aspirants constituency wise. Once we are done with this, the meeting of the SEC would be fixed,” she said.

Earlier, MPCC president DD Lapang had met party supremo Sonia Gandhi to apprise her of the political scenario of the State.

Handing over a report to the party president, Lapang apprised Gandhi of all procedures and steps taken by the MPCC pertaining to the application process and selection of party candidates for the forthcoming assembly elections starting from the Block Congress Committees to the District Congress Committees and finally by the MPCC.

Sonia had made it clear that the first criteria for selection of party candidates should be their ‘ability to win’.
