TURA: Suspected militants from the breakaway ANVC-B outfit targeted a police vehicle and civilians in the heart of Nangalbibra market of south Garo Hills opening indiscriminate fire on innocent civilians leading to the death of two persons and serious injury to six others on Saturday afternoon.

The militants were apparently trying to extort money from the traders who were reluctant to listen to their demand when the ultras opened fire during peak marketing time in the most populated village market of the southern district. The GNLA outfit, in the meantime, has also denied having a hand in the attack. Its finance secretary and area commander Rakkam Ch Marak issued a clarification to The Shillong Times denying his group’s involvement in the attack on civilians. The incident took place just after 4 PM Saturday afternoon when there were hundreds of people inside Nangalbibra market purchasing essential items during the weekly market day.
