Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday asked the Fisheries Department to step up fish production to meet the increasing demand in the state.

Reviewing the performance of the department at a meeting with its Minister Basanta Das and other senior officials here, Gogoi emphasised on the need for production of fish seed locally as well as to procure it from outside to augment fish production in the state.

Instructing it to go for desiltation of the water bodies, Gogoi said the department should create awareness among the fish farmers to adopt modern scientific methods for fish production. Stating a scheme would be taken up to provide housing facilities to fish farmers, he asked the department to prepare a list of the farmers who have carved out a niche for themselves so they could be awarded by the government. “The Department must prepare two lists – one of the farmers to be awarded at the district level and the other at the state level,” the Chief Minister added.
