Its a fact that the so-called High-Level Committee is nothing but an instrument of the Govt whose purpose is to give a clean chit to Ampareen Lyngdoh and the other Ministers, MLAs, MDCs, etc who have perpetrated the scam. The Chief Minister has already declared this intention by asking Ms Lyngdoh not to step down until ‘proven guilty’. I wonder what other proof is needed when the CBI has already established her role as the main culprit. Why did the Govt ask the High Court for an internal probe by the Education Dept after the CBI has already probed the matter and given its report? Are we expected to believe that the Education Dept is qualified to conduct an impartial probe into its own unholy mess? Who does the CM think he’s fooling? The people need to hold the CM accountable as much as anybody else for attempting a blatant cover-up instead of punishing the wrong-doers. Shame on the Chief Minister of Meghalaya and his entire cabinet!

 Absolute corruption

 Editor,

It is said that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Minister for Mines, Bindo Lanong is suffering from this syndrome. He seems to believe he is so powerful that he has become untouchable and can get away with anything. Instead of serving the people and the state, he is content to serve the mining mafia alone, no doubt for a fat commission, and damn the commoners! Lanong however is only one of many such egoistic politicians in the present setup who are claiming to be untouchable. Foremost among them is CM Mukul Sangma followed by Charles Pyngrope, DD Lapang, Stanley Wiss Rymbai, Al Hek, Prestone Tynsong, Ampareen Lyngdoh Vincent Pala and lesser politicians who have all been skimming the cream off the top and fattening their bank accounts at our expense. Can a single politician in Meghalaya explain how he or she managed to amass an incredible fortune in the span of 5 years? If so, step forward or else you will get a fitting reply in the coming elections. The people are fed up of the same old corrupt faces year after year and want a drastic change. We also want Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal to come to Meghalaya and expose these corrupt bullies like they have done in the rest of the country. Its time to clean up Meghalaya in the real sense of the term!

 Mining encourages infiltration

 Editor,

The continuing arrests of Bangladeshi infiltrators bound for the coal mines of Jaintia Hills makes it crystal clear that foreign infiltration is being actively encouraged by the mining lobby in the coal mining areas of Meghalaya. Every Bangladeshi that is apprehended has confessed to being headed for the coal mines to work for peanuts. The unscrupulous mine owners have found a pliable politician to dance to their tune vis-a-vis the Mining Minister who prefers to fiddle as Meghalaya burns and live in a make-belief world of his own! To the lobbyists of the Inner Line Permit system, I say go to the coal mines of Meghalaya and take a census first. Let your eyes be opened and become aware of the conspiracy hatched by the mining lobby and the Govt to infiltrate immigrants into these areas as cheap labour. If shutting down the mines means solving the major part of the problem of influx and infiltration and saving the environment, then why are you not proposing the same instead of recommending antiquated and ridiculous theories which will solve nothing and invite economic disaster in the long run? Shut down the mines if you can, and the people will be ever grateful to you.

Yours etc.,
