NONGSTOIN: The office of the Deputy Commissioner Election Branch, West Khasi Hills District conducted an electoral roll hearing for the 33-Rambrai-Jyrngam Assembly Constituency at Rambrai, West Khasi Hills on Tuesday where hundreds of new voters who had applied for enrollment into the electoral roll appeared.
During the hearing it was found that there were some suspicious applicants bearing names which appeared to be either Chinese or Japanese like Paul Leong, Joan Leong Francis Rabha and Saman Kuri who appeared before the election officials with the intention of getting enrolled into the electoral roll under 33-Rambrai-Jyrngam A/C.
Rambrai based NGOs comprising of KSU, HANM, WPM and WKSU strongly opposed such suspicious applicants for the enrollment.
The NGOs complained to the election officials and gave a ten days deadline to delete the names of such suspicious applicants.
The NGOs also warned Kwikly Marngar Sordar Shnong of Rambrai for issuing residential certificates to them, and also they give him a deadline of 10 days to delete them from the list of Rambrai residents.
Further inquiry against those suspicious applicants revealed that Paul Leong and Joan Marbaniang is the father and wife of Shillong based business tycoon one Kimfa owner of Kim Hundai motors and also the Congress ticket aspirants of Rambrai Jyrngam AC. Surprisingly the name of Joan Marbaniang in the EPIC application form was different from her documents, because in her driving license the name is written as Joan Leong.
The NGOs termed that such illegal enrollment shall be very harmful to the local indigenous residents in the future. They pointed that if such illegal activities continue, the non-tribals shall over-power the local people within a short time. In the meantime, the election officials assured to take proper examination against those suspicious applicants and take necessary action accordingly.
