SHILLONG: The UDP has decided to wait for the reply of the party legislator from Nongkrem Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit before taking a call on future course of action.

Rumours have been flying thick and fast that UDP firebrand leader, who had criticised the UDP leadership Dr Donkupar Roy for issuing party ticket to one Dr Md Mizanur Rehman Kazi from Rajabala constituency, is planning to quit the party and contest the upcoming elections on Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP).

“We have given him till November 16 to reply. We would wait till the end of deadline before taking any further course of action on this issue,” party sources informed here on Tuesday.

In the notice, the UDP leadership asked Basaiawmoit to make his stand clear whether he is interested in contesting the upcoming Assembly elections on the UDP ticket.

While downplaying on the issue of en masse resignation by members of the UDP’s Nongkrem Circle, sources said that the party was not bothered about the action of Basaiawmoit supporters.

“Our main concern is the deadline given to the legislator. Once the deadline is over, the party leadership would have a clear idea to which direction this matter is heading for,” party sources said.

It may be mentioned that the members of UDP’s Nongkrem circle resigned from the party en masse opposing the leadership’s ‘anti-tribal’ stand.

The UDP’s Nongkrem Circle has been opposing the party’s decision to filed Dr Muhammad Mizanur Rehman Kazi, a non-tribal, to contest the 2013 Assemble elections from Rajabala.

Though no decision was taken on their future course of action, the UDP members expressed their willingness to join HSPDP under the leadership of Nongstoin MLA Hoping Stone Lyngdoh.

Speakers at the meeting hinted that Basaiawmoit would contest the 2013 election from HSPDP.
