SHILLONG: Jowai Police on Sunday arrested one person with disabilities from Shangpung village in West Jaintia Hills identified as Fulmoon Suchiang for attempting to rape a 17-month-old baby in Shangpung Pohshnong on November 15.

According to sources, Suchiang, a deaf and a dumb person attempted to commit the crime while the mother of the baby was off to the market on November 15. However, his attempt failed with the interference of two kids, aged around 5 and 6 years, who were playing nearby and witnessed the whole incident.

“Suchiang threatened the two kids and asked them to maintain silence, however, the kids narrated the incident to the mother of the baby,” the source said.

When contacted, newly appointed Superintendent of Police of West Jaintia Hills, Herbert Lyngdoh said that the accused was remanded in 14-day judicial custody on Monday.
