SHILLONG: Despite being charged by the CBI for allegedly orchestrating large-scale irregularities in the appointment of assistant teachers in government lower primary schools, Congress has given a virtual NOC to Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to contest the Assembly election due in 2013.
Giving this indication, the AICC general secretary in-charge Meghalaya Dhaniram Shandil on Wednesday said, “The AICC is aware of the matter. But I do not think that is going to affect her (Ampareen) chances of getting the party ticket.”
“Since the matter is still pending before the court, it would not be right for him to pass any comment on the issue,” he said adding “We have full faith on the judiciary”.
When asked how many woman candidates would get Congress ticket, he said this time number would be more.
“Being a matrilineal society, I know that people of the State would like to see more women candidates contesting the election. I can only assure that they would not be disappointed this time,” Shandil said. Besides Ampareen Lyngdoh, other prominent women ticket aspirants are MPCC working president Deborah Ch Marak (Williamnagar), former minister Roshan Warjri (Shillong North) and State Mahila Congress general secretary Pelcy Snaitang (Mawthengkut). It is learnt that the All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) will also recommend a few names for the party tickets. Meanwhile, party sources informed that Urban Affairs Minister, MPCC working president and Warjri feature among the 46 shortlisted names to be recommended to the Party’s central election committee (CEC) for approval.
