Non-tribal labourer beaten to death

SHILLONG: Police on Wednesday apprehended one Banker Nongkseh (22 yrs) for allegedly assaulting three non-local labourers in the name of checking influx together with his five accomplices at Umbir (RB) leading to the death of one of them.

However, the villagers of Umbir became good Samaritans as they could apprehend the main accused after hearing the cry of the victims. They also handed him over to police.

The six miscreants picked up three non-local labourers from Mawiong in a Maruti local taxi on Tuesday at around 7.30pm and asked them to produce documents to prove their identities and on failing to do so, they took them to Mawlai Phudmuri and then headed towards Umbir (RB) where they assaulted them.

As a result, one unidentified person died on the spot while another, Dekonto Bania (30) sustained serious injuries and was admitted at Civil Hospital, Shillong. Body of the deceased was sent to Civil Hospital, Nongpoh for post-mortem. Another victim is yet to be traced.

On hearing the cry of the assaulted persons, the villagers at Umbir village came out and managed to apprehend Banker Nongkseh and handed him over to Umiam police.

The other persons are yet to be traced and the investigation is in progress.
