Govt mulls digital literacy scheme for students

SHILLONG: The State Government is contemplating to initiate digital literacy scheme in the State for students of Classes XI and XII to give them an upper hand while applying for entrance examinations engineering, IIT and medical courses.

Addressing the gathering at a function held to distribute laptops to meritorious students who excelled in the 2012 board exams in the State, Commissioner and Secretary of Information Technology department, DP Wahlang, said under the scheme the Government will provide learning aids to higher secondary students who are planning to sit for various entrance exams.

However, this scheme is still in the planning stage and it may take time for it to be finally implemented in the State, he said.

It may be mentioned that altogether 179 laptops were distributed to meritorious students who excelled in the various board examinations for Classes X and XII for MBOSE, ICSE and CBSE courses.

IT Minister AL Hek, while addressing the gathering, said that education is a capital investment where parents are investing for their child to ensure that their education is not affected at any cost.

“Students must study very hard as there are many more milestones to achieve,” Hek said to the students.

Earlier, Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said that the State Government has various programmes for the students and they must excel in their academics since the world has become very competitive.

Parents and relatives of the students who were given laptops were also present on the occasion.

It may be mentioned that is the sixth year that the IT department has awarded laptops to meritorious students of the State.
