SHILLONG: In a boost to Umroi sitting legislator Stanly Wiss Rymbai’s prospects of bagging the Congress ticket, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) through K Mahendra, national secretary and in charge of Meghalaya, has asserted that the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress has accorded recognition to the Umroi Assembly Youth Congress (UAYC) under the leadership of Woodstrar Ryntathiang since it has been appointed as per the proper selection procedure of the MPYC.

“No other Assembly Youth Congress or Block Youth Congress Committee will be recognized,” a statement issued by Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress president Gabriel Wahlang said.

The statement comes at a time when UAYC vice president LR Lyngkhoi and chief adviser Sunlight Shadap have threatened to boycott the elections if Umroi legislator Stanly Wiss Rymbai is denied the party ticket.

“The IYC national secretary has expressed concern that some districts and block-level Youth Congress Committees were still using the old system of the Youth Congress,” Wahlang said in the statement.

According to the statement, following the transformation process of the Indian Youth Congress district youth committees and block youth committees have been de-recognized by the Indian Youth Congress.

“All AYC presidents are supposed to work for the interest of the Party not for a particular aspiring candidate,” the statement added. A tug of war for the Congress ticket is on between the sitting legislator and Ngaitlang Dhar, a coal baron from Jaintia Hills.

The Umroi Youth Congress had earlier claimed that it had officially nominated Rymbai for the party ticket since Dhar is not a member of any primary unit of the Congress committee in the constituency.
