NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students Union, Nongstoin Circle and Nongpyndeng Unit, earlier this month had issued an ultimatum to the PWD department of Nongstoin to immediately repair the roads of Nongpyndeng Village here at Nongstoin.

“The lackadaisical attitude of the PWD department towards our genuine demands for better roads has compelled us to call in a 48 hours bandh at Nongpyndeng, starting at 6am on December 3 to 6am on December 5” Davis Goldfield Wanniang President of the KSU Nongstoin Circle said.

It may be mentioned that Nongpyndeng village has been hailed as a “model village” and is also home to premier institutions of West Khasi Hills District. However, the roads leading to and from the village are in a sorry state. This road is frequented by commuters that may well be in figures above three thousand. It is disheartening to see the terrible conditions of the road and the unavailability of footpaths.

Hamarbiangbor Nongsiej, KSU Nongpyndeng Unit President told pressmen that the project for the road within Nongpyndeng village was sanctioned in 2007. “I am amazed that since 2007 there has been no repair work on this road. This road is also leads to Maweit, a coal belt area in the district” Nongsiej said.

This scribe was informed that Maweit being a coal belt sends its daily haul of coal from the area to elsewhere via Nongpyndeng. These heavy trucks plying everyday damage the road sooner than expected.

The KSU Nongstoin Circle and the Nongpyndeng Unit have urged the Nongstoin Region Local Taxi Owners and Drivers Association (NRLTODA) Nongpyndeng Unit, village authorities and the coal traders of the area to co-operate with them to make the agitation a success.
