SHILLONG: In a noble gesture, the Department of Social Work, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) has taken the initiative to adopt Mawpun Kshaid, a village which is 25 kilometres from the state capital.

As per the university, the objective of the initiative is to bring about development in the village with a focus being in the areas of health, education, sanitation, drinking water and to be a liaison with other organizations.

It may be mentioned that the department has taken this initiative for a period of three years.

The village was adopted in a glittering function held recently where Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chairman Fabian Lyngdoh was the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Fabian Lyngdoh stressed on the need for various organizations to converge for development while mentioning that there is a great role for the University to bring about change in the village.

Dr. Ngachan Francis, Director, ICAR was present as a special guest in the occasion and in his speech he said that food security and nutrition security for people especially marginal, small, poor and landless farmers is of utmost concern.

According to Francis, marketing of goods has always been a problem for villagers, which needs to be dealt with and there could be many agricultural problems that people face.

He added that the problems of marketing goods cannot be dealt totally from an agricultural point of view but certain social practices need to change such as land tenure system that could be a hindrance towards adoption of scientific agricultural practices.
