SHILLONG: The inconvenience to the people especially the school students have prompted the Shillong Bench of the Gauhati High Court to stay the shifting of jail road Municipal market to the roadside leading to Jail Road Boys High School adjacent to the Shillong District Jail.

The court also stayed the construction of the new market on the road side near the School.

Wooden temporary structures for stalls have already come up on the roadside near the School initiated by the Shillong Municipal Board.

After hearing a petition of Jail Road Welfare Committee against the move of the Shillong Municipal Board to shift the market, the Judge SR Sen in his order on November 29 said that Government before constructing the stalls in random, should consider the matter keeping in mind the interest of the public and added that such construction requires to be stayed.

Earlier, the counsel for the petitioner K Paul said that the move of the Municipal Board to shift the market has caused inconvenience to the public especially those residing in the area.

“Moreover, two schools are also situated nearby which adds to the congestion”, Paul said.

According to Paul, despite many representations and appeals by the residents of jail road, “the Municipal Authority failed to understand the difficulties and consequential disturbance caused due to such shifting and construction of stalls”.
