SHILLONG: The general council of Shillong city district of the UDP on Saturday demanded a serious revamping of the police department while stating that their morale off late has been tainted due to nexus in militancy, corruption and various other forms of crime and indiscipline.

Stating that the law and order especially in Garo hills is way out of hand, UDP Shillong city district general secretary Allan Dkhar said that this in itself is an indication that the police are not efficient enough unlike decades ago when there was the HNLC uprising and matter was well under control.

“The fact that the former DSP, Champion Sangma founded the militant outfit, GNLA is an indication that the police force is very weak and needs revamping”, he said adding that their performance is not up to the mark. Meanwhile, commenting on the recent attack on MPCC working president Deborah Marak, he said they were taken aback over the statement made by out-going DGP Rajiv Mehta blaming Marak for her failure to inform the police which led to the incident.

Referring to the recruitment process, the UDP Shillong city district general secretary said that the recruitment of personnel should be based on merit and employment policy and not on political consideration.
