Committee formed to end violence in Garo Hills

 SHILLONG: A committee christened Movement for Peace and Harmony (MPH) was formed in Shillong comprising of several leaders of Garo Hills. The committee aims to end violence in Garo Hills which is mainly due to the spurt in militant activities. In a meeting held recently in the city, the members of the MPH has appealed to the state law and order authorities to stop the atrocities being meted out towards the general public while conducting mass operations.

“The committee will also send the messages to the different arms struggling groups not to create panic and fear psychosis and come forward for mutual understandings with the government for the achievement of their demands and goals but not with the guns”, MPH chairman Carry Marak said in a statement issued here on Sunday.

The arms struggling brothers and the state government should create better understanding and conducive atmosphere to bring normalcy in the region, Marak while stressing that various problems and difficulties has erupted in Garo Hills due to the present law and order situation.

The meeting was attended by 23 members comprising of senior citizens, youth and the leaders of the various social organizations belonging to the Garo community. “The committee will also submit the representation to the state government to create a better policy and strategy so as to open the door to all the different groups to place their grievances in a peaceful manner and to bring them into the main stream by providing better opportunities in their future livelihood.

“The committee will also consult and intimidate the All Achik Peace Forum and all the civil societies from Garo Hills for preparing the necessary precautionary measures towards ever lasting peace in the state particularly in Garo Hills”, Marak said.
