New mineral found in state

SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister and in charge of Mining and Geology Bindo M Lanong on Wednesday informed that the department recently discovered a new type of mineral, Apatite, in the state.

The primary use of apatite is in the manufacture of fertilizer and it is a source of phosphorus.

“The mineral can be of value in the cultivation of soil,” Lanong said while addressing a regional conference on “Empowering NE: Overcoming Challenges in Development of Power Sector in NE India.” A Mumbai-based firm is studying the prospects of this mineral, the Minister informed.
