Hockey championship gets underway

SHILLONG: The much awaited hockey competition in the Shillong Games 2012 organised by the the Shillong Sports Association got underway at Polo Grounds on Friday.

In the first match of the event, Pynthorbah SC locked horns with Umsohsun SC.

Before the start of the match the players of both the Teams were introduced to the President of the Association K.F.Rangad in presence of Vice Presidents and other Officials of the Association.

In the first match, Umsohsun scored the first goal of the competition in the 9th minute through Bhabok Laloo. However Umsohsun’s joy was shortlived as Pynthorbah equalized when Banjop War converted a penalty corner in the 11th minute. From thereon Pynthorbah, who had younger players in its ranks when compared to Umshosun, took control of the match. Aibert Jyrwa struck twie in the 22nd and 27th minutes to take Pynthorbah to victory.

Meanwhile, in the second match, Laitumkhrah SC drubbed Umpling SC 9-0 in an one sided affair The first half saw Laitumkhrah tasted blood as early as the 6th minute when Roger netted one for his side. What followed was a flurry of goals in the 7th, 9th, 17th, 22nd, and 25th minute which took the score to 6-0 at the end of first half. Crossing over the young Laitumkhrah side scored three more goal to walk home with a comprehensive victory.
