Support Human Rights in Tibet

Share post:

Since 2009 there has been a continuing wave of self-immolations in Tibet. 92 Tibetans have set themselves on fire as a form of political protest so far. 28 self-immolations occurred in November alone. Sadly, despite the increasing number of self-immolations, the international community remains largely unaware of what is going on inside Tibet. The Chinese government has responded to the self-immolations with further repressive policies, and sentencing of individuals suspected of having shared information regarding the self-immolations with the outside world. We need your help, through grassroots support, to ensure that accurate information about events in Tibet is widely disseminated and accessible to all. “Despite repeated appeals of the Tibetan Government in Exile not to take drastic actions, self-immolations continue in Tibet. Therefore, my appeal to the North Eastern Indian community and concerned State Governments is to stand for justice by answering the universal aspirations of Tibetans in Tibet: “the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet and freedom for Tibetans,” Please join us, as we stand in Solidarity With Tibet. Tell your friends to support Human Rights in Tibet.

Unpardonable lapse

I strongly agree with the letter written by Frederick Mukhim (ST Dec 6, 2012) which spoke about the wrong portrayal of Toshanbor Sing Nongbet by the State Election Department. Toshan has brought pride and honour to the State of Meghalaya by showcasing his talent during the show – ‘India’s Got Talent-Season IV’, which had recently concluded. Even though he did not get the winner’s title but he was among the finalists. Unfortunately, the State Election Department has simply been misusing him vide an advertisement published in all local newspapers on December 3, last, where Toshan was shown posing with an EPIC Card belonging to an unknown person. This clearly shows the carelessness of the Election Department. As Frederick has suggested, Toshan should not get sucked into these political/electoral matters but should single-mindedly pursue his passion for ‘Opera’ which will bring him fame and fortune. I trust the State Election Department will never make such errors again because it actually hurts the prestige of a person like Toshan.

Tata Tele-service closing shop in NE

Tata Tele-Service which happens to be the country’s sixth largest operator is likely to wind up its business in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North East circle from January 18, 2013. Thousands of people who are directly or indirectly associated with their services are going to suffer. Some reports say that the Tata Tele-services in J&K declared a Refund Package for their users in that state. No such package has been announced for us in North eastern region. I request the authorities concerned to kindly issue PORTABILITY process for Tata Photon Plus users at the earliest so that we may not suffer for putting our trust in the Company for so long.

Apropos your report that the Office of the Registrar, Tura Municipal Board was closed on December 5, 2012, this is to clarify that the Office was not entirely closed as has been reported in your esteemed daily. In fact, services were rendered the entire day. However, there was a gap in the early morning hours because the IVth Grade staff had to take his ailing wife to the hospital and the dealing assistant went for her check up at Tura Civil Hospital where she had to wait for her turn. The Registrar (Medical & Health Officer) is on deputation to Goeragre 2nd MLP Battalion for ongoing recruitment.
