HANM calls for public meeting

 NONGSTOIN: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) West Khasi Hills have called a public meeting at Shallang market on December 12.

The public meeting would discuss the fate of the non-locals working, residing and conducting businesses in Shallang. Speaking to our correspondent, Arphul Kharbani, president of the HANM West Khasi Hills said that earlier other organizations like the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ri- Lyngngam and Umdang Area and the Coal Labourers Association of Shallang Area had issued warning to the non-locals, but they had ignored the warning.

Arphul also said that the HANM and the other two NGOs were highly concerned over the issue and said that they would publicly discuss as to what steps need to be taken in order to overcome the problem.

Arphul said that after the meeting on December 12, the local population living in Shallang would take over all the shops operating in Shallang without valid documents. He however made it clear that the he had sought permission from the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police West Khasi Hills to hold the meeting at Shallang which has been approved.
