SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Khliehriat Circle on Sunday asked the state government to further strengthen the man-power at the Khliehriat District Treasury for better functioning of the district treasury while demanding an immediate appointment of a new treasury officer for the Amlarem Sub-Treasury since the same is currently run by an officer of the Khliehriat District Treasury causing a lot of problems not only for the officer in-charge but also the people as a whole.

Owing to complaints lodged by the people of East Jaintia Hills District over the non-availability of a treasury officer at the District Treasury office at Khliehriat, the KSU conducted an inspection recently and found out that the same officer, A Papang was also serving as an in-charge at the Amlarem Sub-Treasury.

“Papang is a regular Treasury Officer of the Khliehriat District Treasury but he was also made to look after the Amlarem sub-treasury which has resulted in a lot of problems for the people of the district who visit the office to get their work done”, KSU Khliehriat Circle general secretary Cheriti Suja said.

Stating that this department decided the revenue collection of the state, Suja said from Excise Duties to Value added tax (VAT), this department comes first in terms of revenue collection. “Based on this, a need is felt to channelize a better and an efficient system in this department besides man-power”, he said.

He also maintained that entitling one job for a Treasury Officer of the Khliehriat District Treasury would prove beneficial for the people of East Jaintia Hills who come to this office almost every day to deposit money to the government treasury.

As per the findings of the KSU, it was reported that the Average Daily Collection Revenue of the government from East Jaintia Hills District amounted to about Rs 15, 08, 394. “That is why; it is very difficult for one officer to serve two masters at the same time”, KSU general secretary asserted.

Moreover, the union has stated that even though, the treasury office has been upgraded from Khliehriat Sub-Treasury to a district treasury; however, it was found that the work and the number of staff still remains the same.
