SHILLONG: Anti-graft NGOs have urged Governor RS Mooshahary to withhold his assent of the flawed Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, 2012 which was passed by the State Assembly on Friday.
“We request you to reserve your assent on the flawed Lokayukta Act. We would also like to urge you to send the Act back to the House for consideration,” anti-graft NGOs of the State said in a joint representation submitted to Mooshahary on Saturday.
While referring to the scam in the appointment of the assistant teachers and the ICDS scam, the NGOs stated that it is imperative to have a strong Lokayukta to address issues relating to corruption.
“We trust that you will use your constitutional powers and your office to send a message that there should not be an abuse of legislative privileges and that law making has to be done in the interest of the people at large,” the anti-graft NGOs said while stating that they are hopeful that the Governor will support them in the fight against corruption.
The anti-graft NGOs had decided to organize a protest rally at Motphran on December 19 at 12 noon.
Earlier, amidst walk out by the Opposition and protest by anti-graft NGOs inside the Assembly premises, the Government on Friday forcefully passed the flawed Meghalaya Lokayukta Bill without any discussion, rejecting the demand of the members either to refer the Bill to the House Select Committee or call a Special Session.
