SHILLONG: Even as a nation is outraged by the rape and brutal assault of a 23-year-old medical student in New Delhi, a similar incident in Meghalaya, where an 18-year old met with an almost similar fate, continues to expose the flaws in the system.

A member of the Women’s Commission based in East Garo Hills on Tuesday alleged that no immediate medical attention was given to the Williamnagar rape victim after she was brought to the Williamnagar Civil Hospital on Thursday night last.

Meanwhile, another minor (13) involved in the rape was arrested on Tuesday.

With this number of arrested in this connection has gone up to 15 out of 16.

According to the Women’s Commission member, who did not wish to be named, doctors at the Civil Hospital were indifferent to the injuries suffered by the girl and discharged her the same night stating that her condition was not serious even as the victim was in pain.

“The parents of the victim were also asked to procure the medicines at around 1.30 am which only goes to show that the government hospital is running without this essential item,” the member said.

Lambasting the medical authorities for their insensitive behaviour, the member said that the attitude shown by the hospital authorities towards victims of heinous crimes like rape will dampen (the spirit of such individuals and the government should take serious note of such incidents.

The 18-year old girl was raped by around 16 miscreants near Sacred Heart School when the former was returning from the Simsang Festival along with two of her friends around 11 pm on Thursday last.
