SHILLONG: In the pursuit of bridging the digital divide amongst the rural community, the IGNOU Institute for Vocational Education and Training IIVET and the Block Resources Management Committee of Saipung C&RD Block, East Jaintia Hills district, entered into a Memorandum of Agreement to train and improve the local rural community in this part of the district.

The initiative, described as the first of its kind, aimed to focus on agriculture and IT literacy through the use of ICT tools, under the guidance of the IIVET and supported by INTEL Private Limited from Bangalore known for its development in the IT sector.

Dr Ananya S Guha Regional Director of IIVET said, ” Information Technology is an important asset and a powerful tool that can be used in reaching out to many communities through various modules and interventions”,

Planning Secretary of the BRMC Dominic S Wankhar also stated that, there is a need to branch information technology with the farming community similar to what ITC’s echopal has been successful in some states.

The BRMC has been supported and facilitated under a livelihood project by Meghalaya Rural Development Society and funded by IFAD in partnership with the state government and the Central Government.
