SHILLONG: The UDP State Election Committee (SEC) is likely to meet in January second week to announce the final list of candidates for the ensuing Assembly elections due in February next year.
“We are set to meet in the second week of January to release the final list of candidates,” said UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh here on Thursday.
According to him, the party would take the final call on whether to field candidates in all the 60 constituencies.
“We would like to put up candidates in all the constituencies,” UDP working president said. The party, which had earlier decided to go it alone, has so far released 44 names.
According to the UDP chief Dr Donkupar Roy, the party had unanimously decided not to have any pre-poll alliance.
According to Dr Roy, “the main reason (due to which) we decided to go it alone is that we have already finalised our candidates for almost all the constituencies in the State.”
“It is now impossible for the party to withdraw the names. For any pre-poll alliance there should a seat-sharing agreement,” he said adding that the party also has to accept a ‘compromise policy’.
“The party is no longer in a position to accept such agreements,” Dr Roy added.
