SHILLONG: Lack of breath analyzers can be a big hurdle for the police who seek to conduct drive against drunken driving on the eve New Year celebrations in Meghalaya.

Besides drunken driving, rash driving especially by the bikers has become a cause of concern. East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said that traffic men will be deployed throughout the city to ensure that there is no rash and drunken driving on the eve of New Year.

There was a plan on the part of the police to purchase breath analyzers, but in vain after the old breath analyzers, purchased by the Police several years ago did not work. The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has sought for procurement of modern equipments like alcometers (breath analyzers) to keep a tab on incidents of drunk driving in the city and a proposal was also sent for it.

Another official looking after the traffic said that checkings would be conducted in the city to avoid drunken driving on the eve New Year celebrations in the city while adding that the alcometers will be procured shortly.
