Bangalore: Former External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on Monday sought amendments to related criminal laws to make punishment for attrocities against women more stringent and ensure timely justice.
Speaking at a function organised by the Photo Journalists Association of Bangalore here, he expressed concern over the increasing number of cases of attrocities against women and said there was need for a special court also to ensure timebound justice was rendered to the affected women.
Referring to the recent brutal assault on Nirbhaya at New Delhi and a similar case against another hapless woman in Mangalore in Karnataka, Mr Krishna said such causes were on the rise.
‘It is happening in every village of our country. Some get attention and some do not and there is need for social awakening to contain such attacks against the fairer sex,’ he said.
The Former Maharashtra Governor said the punishment meted out to criminals indulging in crime against women should be so severe that it acted as a deterrent.
Mr Krishna, replying to questions from media, said he was continuing to be actively engaged in party work in the state.
Asked whether he was prepared to shoulder any responsibility bestowed upon himn by the Party High Command, Mr Krishna said ‘I do not want to respond to hypothetical questions.
‘I learn’t to do so more as an External Affairs Minister, besides being Chief Minister of Karnataka,’ Mr Krishna said. (UNI)
