SHILLONG: There was more smoke than fire and light during the display of fireworks at Khyndailad, much to the disappointment of people gathered on the cold January 1 evening.

The initiative was of Hotel Polo Towers to enthrall the strong crowd which gathered at Khyndailad to welcome the New Year.

A professional pyrotechnic firm was brought in from Kolkata to choreograph the entire display.

However, the display of the fire works for half-an-hour had some embarrassing moments for the organizers as many times the crackers did not burst as they should have been.

It also sent people into tizzy on two occasions when the flames of the bomb instead of going up headed straight towards the crowd.

This resulted in a minor stampede as people were seen rushing for cover from the flames.

However, the organizers were impressed with the turn out of the people to witness the event.

The organizers are of the view that if people like the event, similar initiatives can be organized in a bigger way in the years to come.
