New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission will give suggestions to the government on making laws regarding sexual offences more stringent after a discussion with stakeholders next week.
An NHRC spokesperson said the Commission has decided to organise a conference next Tuesday to discuss with various stakeholders the existing laws for taking action against violators of women’s dignity and explore the possibilities of making these more stringent.
“Suggestions emerging out of the discussions will be sent to the government,” the spokesperson said.
Last February, inclusion of a separate chapter in IPC was discussed at the Statutory Full Commission of NHRC and it was decided that NCW send a proposal on the issue to the rights body for its consideration.
NHRC Chairperson Justice K G Balakrishnan had then stated that the issue is very important and the Law Commission needed to take up this matter.
Meanwhile, against the backdrop of Delhi gangrape case, LJP chief Ramvilas Paswan on Wednesday demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention in checking rape crimes in his home state Bihar ruled by NDA.
Paswan alleged that incidents of rape in Nitish Kumar-ruled Bihar were “distressing” and “alarming”.
“In the context of the recent barbaric gang rape case of Delhi girl, I would like to draw your kind attention to the distressing situation of rape cases in the state of Bihar. It may be seen from the data taken from the website of Bihar Police. The above indicates that the position of rape cases in Bihar is quite alarming and Government of Bihar does not seem to be serious at all to deal with persons accused in these heinous crimes against women,” he said in a letter to the Prime Minister.
Enclosing a copy of the Bihar Police website in his letter to Dr Singh, he said that a total of 823 rape cases have been registered in various police stations. (PTI)
