SHILLONG: Following reports of HNLC making an attempt to regroup ahead of the upcoming Assembly election, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the State Government to keep a close watch on the activities of the banned outfit. In a directive issued last month, a senior MHA official said the state government must stop the HNLC from “regrouping, rearming itself, expanding its cadres.”

Meanwhile, according to a separate notification of December 12 the Centre has constituted a tribunal to be headed Delhi High Court judge Sudershan Kumar Misra to review the ban on the HNLC.

At the same time, the Centre has also allowed the HNLC to appear before the Tribunal on January 29 at Delhi High Court. The Centre is likely to extend the ban on the HNLC by another two years. It may mention that the HNLC was declared as a banned outfit by the Centre in 2000.
