Guwahati: The outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has flayed the apex literary organization in Assam, Asom Sahitya Sabha (ASS) for naming the main pandal of the next bi-annual conference at Barpeta after a non-Assamese personality called B P Saraf.

In a statement issued to the media, the outlawed outfit has raised question on what ground such a person who is not known to the people of Assam in general, has been chosen for naming the main pandal of Asom Sahitya Sabha conference.

The outfit also dismissed the detail write-up authored by a prominent litterateur and an editor in popular Assamese daily that tries to explain the justification of choosing the name of B P Saraf for ‘benevolent contribution made by him and his family towards various social and education institutions in the State’. The ULFA stated that on the basis of making monetary contributions towards some social institutions in Assam could not be the criterion for selecting a person to name the main pandal of Asom Sahitya Sabha conference after him.

The ULFA stated that its opposition was not at all based on the reason that the person concern is not an Assamese-speaking or son of the soil. It said it wanted that Asom Sahitya Sabha should select a person who has made immense contribution to Assamese national life especially in the field of literature and culture and is revered by all sections of the society. It said such person may be from any community.

The ULFA pointed out that it hold Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala in the highest esteem for his invaluable and timeless contribution towards Assam and its people despite his Rajasthani roots.
