SHILLONG: A full-fledged delegation of the Election Commission of India (ECI) will arrive in the city on Monday to take stock of the preparations for the upcoming Assembly election scheduled in February-March.

Chief Electoral Officer P Naik on Sunday informed that the delegation would meet leaders of different political parties and deputy commissioners and superintendents of police on Monday, while on Tuesday the delegation would meet the State Chief Secretary and the DGP. The delegation, to be led by Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath, would be accompanied by the two election commissioners Dr Syed Nasim Ahmad Zaidi and HS Brahma.

According to Naik, the delegation would discuss the general preparedness of the State for holding the elections besides taking stock of the law and order situation in the State especially in Garo Hills.

It may be mentioned that the ECI delegation is on a tour to the three Northeastern states – Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura – where elections are scheduled to be held in February-March.

On the imposition of the code of conduct for the elections, Naik informed that the ECI would take a decision after their visit to the State. “I expect the code of conduct to be imposed on January 9,” he added.
