Srinagar: Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was resumed on Saturday afternoon after remaining closed since Saturday morning due to slippery road conditions following fresh snowfall.

However, majority of the roads to far-flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) also remained closed due to heavy snowfall since last month.

The highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed this morning following fresh snowfall due to which road had become slippery.

A Border Roads Organisation (BRO), officer told UNI over phone from Jawahar tunnel that the road was put through again this afternoon following improvement in the weather conditions.

He said there was four inches of snowfall on the highway between Jawahar tunnel and Banihal area.

Today vehicles were allowed from Srinagar to Jammu this afternoon, he said, adding the road was safe for journey.

A Met department spokesman said there would be moderate to heavy snowfall in the Pirpanchal range, including the Banihal on the highway till tomorrow afternoon.

The authorities had allowed only one way traffic on the highway, since December 13, 2012 following heavy snowfall for free movement of vehicles.

On Saturday, vehicles were scheduled to proceed towards Jammu from Srinagar.

Dozens of areas, particularly near the LoC, including Machil, Keran, Karnah, Tangdhar and Neeru also remained cut off with their respective district headquarters due to closure of roads following heavy snowfall since last month.

The National Highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, remained closed since December following heavy snowfall, particularly between Sonmarg-Zojila-Meenamarg.

The authorities are operating AN-32 Indian Air Force (IAF) plane to airlift the stranded passengers between border district of Kargil, Jammu and Srinagar.

Recently a private Airline has also started service to Kargil.

A number of roads connecting far flung and remote areas with district headquarters of Leh and Kargil also remained closed due to snowfall. (UNI)
