Landowners set fresh deadline

Shillong: Landowners of areas close to the Shillong Airport at Umroi have set a fresh deadline till January 31 for the State government to clear their dues in connection with land acquired for the proposed expansion of the airport.

The decision was taken at a meeting held on Tuesday at Umden Mission Dorbar Hall attended by around 200 land owners from Umden Mission, Umden Arka, Umden Umsaitprah and Nongrah Umroi.

It might be mentioned that the acquisition of lands started in 2008 and the size of land proposed to be acquired is more than 250 acres.

They also threatened to stop parting away with their land to the government for the airport expansion if their demand was not met within the period of the deadline.

The meeting also resolved not to accept the amount of Rs 5 crores sanctioned for payment of land compensation out of the total Rs 11.44 crore.

The landowners also said if the payment was not cleared within this month, they would start constructing houses and carry out agricultural activities in the land earlier acquired by the government. (UNI)
