Media briefed to check ‘paid news’

TURA: In view of the strict guidelines from the Election Commission to keep a watch on paid news initiated by political parties, the District Election Officer, West Garo Hills held a meeting with members of both the print and electronic media here on Thursday evening to brief them on the measures to check such activities.

Addressing the media persons at the meeting, DEO Pravin Bakshi informed that the district-level Media Certification and Monitoring Committees (MCMC) have been formed to keep track on cases of paid news so that each candidate can have a level playing field and to ensure that no manipulative or damaging news and “surrogate advertisements” are carried.

The committee will also entertain complaints from the aggrieved candidates, he said. During the meeting, measures to check paid news were highlighted through a power point presentation.

The meeting also discussed election preparedness and law and order situation among other issues.

The DEO informed the media persons that West Garo Hills district has been classified into 62 sectors and that vulnerability mapping is being done to identify sensitive and vulnerable areas in the district.

The district comprises of 11 constituencies and a total electorate of 24,6548 voters.
