State Day celebrations in Jowai

Along with the rest of State, West Jaintia hills District also celebrated the 41st Statehood Day at District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai here on Monday. The celebration began with a Marathon in the morning.

W Laloo, a senior citizen of Jowai, who was the chief guest, invited all to continue to follow the principles of the founders of the Hills State and to maintain peace and tranquillity in the district. The guest of honour, K Tariang spoke about the selfless struggle of the statehood movement leaders and asked every citizen of Meghalaya to have the same spirit for the development of the State.

West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, PS Dkhar, called upon all to dedicate with commitment to their job.

“Development of the State depends on each one of us, so as responsibility citizen we should work with cooperation and with sincerity,” he said. It may be mentioned as part of the celebration, drawing and painting competition was held on January 18 for junior and senior categories on the theme ‘Unity In Diversity’ and ‘Free Fair and Peaceful Election’. The winners were awarded cash prize of Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively.

The winners for the marathon were awarded cash prizes of Rs 20000, Rs 10000 and Rs 5000 respectively.

Other highlights of the day were dance performances from two blocks of the District.
