SHILLONG: The MPCC working president Deborah Marak has downplayed the emergence of ‘rebel’ Congress candidates in the run up to the elections saying that the party would be able to sort out this problem.

Mrs Marak, who is camping in Williamnagar, said over phone on Tuesday that it is a fact there are rebel candidates in almost all the constituencies. “They are all out to spoil the chances of official nominees of the Congress,” she said.

“The presence of rebel candidates cannot be denied and this is usual thing when the election approaches, we can not help, but the Congress would be able to change the trend in the days to come,” she said.

Asked about the denial of party tickets to many sitting Congress legislators including a minister, the senior Congress leader said the decision (ticket allotment) of the AICC needs to be respected.

“Always the High Command has the last word”, she added.

While some of the rebel Congress candidates will be contesting on Samajwadi Party tickets, others have decided to join the fray as Independents. The Community and Rural Development Minister, Saleng Sangma, also from the Congress, is keen to contest from UDP.
