SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) has alleged that the draft peace agreement signed by the Central and State Government with the militant outfit ANVC was an ‘election oriented’ stunt.

“The Government was not doing anything on the agreement and it was hurriedly signed just before the election,” NPP leader Conrad Sangma said on Thursday, adding, “The entire process is election oriented.”

The draft agreement paves way for expansion of powers of the Garo Hills Autonomous District (GHADC) and it was hurriedly approved by the State Cabinet, Sangma said.

The Union Cabinet is yet to give its nod to the agreement.

Meanwhile, Conrad expressed disappointment over the fact that not even a single woman had applied for the NPP ticket.

It may be reminded that the Congress has issued tickets to five women candidates for the February 23 polls.

Sangma stated that his party would encourage more women to come out and contest the elections in the future.
