SHILLONG: Security has been beefed up in and around the capital city ahead of the Republic Day celebrations on Saturday.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang on Friday said security forces have been deployed across the city and all efforts are being taken to ensure a peaceful Republic Day celebration.

It may be mentioned that the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has called for a 20-hour bandh beginning 10 pm on Friday in boycott of the celebrations.

The police official also informed that the venue of the Republic Day celebration (Polo Ground) has been placed under proper security cover for the function.

“We have put two-three layers of security in and around the ground,” he said.
