NONGSTOIN: West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner S Kharlyngdoh on Monday issued a stern warning to all Government officials in the district to refrain from active participation in the election.

The Deputy Commissioner, while referring to Sec 123 (7) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, barred all Gazetted officers, stipendiary judges and magistrates, members of the armed forces of the Union, members of the police forces, excise officers and such other class of persons in the service of the Government from providing any assistance to any candidate for the furtherance of their prospects in the election.

Kharlyngdoh also said that in case of violation by any official, strict action both judicially and departmentally would be taken against them.

The Deputy Commissioner added that if an official was found helping or abetting a candidate to secure a win in the election, the candidate would be disqualified from the fray.

It may be noted here that reliable sources within the Government have revealed that there are a number of officials in West Khasi Hills who are openly supporting certain candidates in Nongstoin.
