Panchayat polls in Assam begins today

Guwahati: A total of 27, 874 candidates are in the fray in the first phase of panchayat election that is being held on Wednesday in Assam.

Out of these candidates 529 are contesting for president post in Anchalik Panchayats, 2,546 are contesting for members post in Anchalik Panchayats.

Total 2,784 candidates are contesting for president post in Gaon (village) Panchayats while 22,051 candidates are vying for member post in Gaon Panchayats.

According to election officials, the poll will be conducted from 7 A.M. to 3 P.M. Assam government has declared a holiday in the districts and subdivisions where panchayat election is being held tomorrow and consequently all the state government, central government, PSUs, corporations, banks and other financial institutions, education institutions will remain close during the day.

The government has declared dry day in the districts where panchayat election is being held tomorrow and all wine outlets and bars have been asked to keep their shutters down during the day till 6. P.M.

Panchayat election is being conducted in three phases in Assam.

The main political parties which are in the fray are ruling Congress, the BJP, regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
